It is great to be able to report that, after weeks of hard practice, we were placed third out of fourteen bands at the recent Scottish Brass Band Championships in Perth. Not only did we pick up some silverware we also gained promotion to the Third Section. As always, under contest conditions, there was the usual number of small errors, however it was particularly satisfying to be told that the Band had produced a good rich sound and had played the competition piece expressively and with style. Apart from the hard work put in by the Band members our success was, in no small way, down to the efforts of our conductor and musical director, Stevie Baird. His energy, enthusiasm and musical skill got the best out of the Band and his interpretation of the music was a significant factor in our success.
On the Monday night following the contest, while most of the Band took a rest, a few indefatigable senior players joined our Junior Band when they played a mini concert at the Peebles and District Old Folks Welfare meeting in the Burgh Hall. The audience enjoyed two 20 minute sessions from the Band and were greatly appreciative of the young talent that was on show.
After the glitz and glamour of competitions the band is now buckling down to preparing the music for our Spring Concert to be held next month in the Burgh Hall. As departure from our normal Friday night performances we have decided to hold the concert on a Saturday Night. Further details will be in next month’s article however please make Saturday 7th May a date in your diary.
Finally we are holding our next coffee morning on Saturday 23rd April in the Burgh Hall As always there will be Donna’s excellent coffee, delicious home baking and an opportunity to win a prize at our tombola and raffle stalls, so please come along and support your local town band.
