We are working away at our contest piece for the Scottish Championship in Perth on 10th March and we’ll let you know how we fare against our peers in next month’s edition of Peebles Life. In the meantime, we have some great news in that a quintet from the Band under their young conductor, Sophie Ward-Murray competed very successfully in two very recent Ensemble Contests within the age group – 16 and under.  The quintet, pictured with Sophie, (L to R) are Holly Wilson, James Grassick, Carys Cornwall, Phoebe Hibbert and Andrew Wilson.  They first competed in the Ensemble Qualifiers in Hawick under the auspices of the Scottish Borders Brass Band Association where they were awarded a Gold Award. The adjudicator, Chris Shank’s remarks included “Superb Solo Cornet to open…………..You play well together and in tune – thank you – I thoroughly enjoyed this”.

The next Contest was the Scottish Ensemble Championships held in Livingston.  The competition was stiffer and the quintet were only awarded a Silver Award but the adjudicator’s remarks were still very complementary – “…………….some great promise on show today”.

The Senior Band are greatly indebted to Sophie for conducting this quintet and preparing the players for the challenge.  Very well done to you all and we look forward to seeing you competing (and playing with the Senior Band) for many years to come.

Our Development Band continues under the experienced baton of David Robb (Tuesday nights at 6 pm) and we are also greatly indebted to him for bringing the group of youngsters along and improving their overall musical ability and education.  To supplement this another Music Teacher, Caitlin Reilly has offered to give lessons on Friday afternoons – free of charge to all who attend. Caitlin whose parents still live in Peebles played with the Band for many years until her studies took her to Edinburgh and to playing trombone with a higher graded Band.  She has never forgotten the start she received in Peebles and as well as coming back to play at the Beltane, Caitlin would now like to help today’s youngsters to achieve their musical potential.

If you and/or your children would like to join the Silver Band, whether you are a complete beginner, a late starter or someone who has always fancied doing something different then please come along to the Band Hall on the High Street on Tuesday or Thursday nights or email the Band Secretary on secretary.pbsb@gmail.com.  Age and experience is no barrier and instruments and tuition are provided free of charge.

We take this opportunity to thank our many and varied patrons who, in addition to our own fund raising efforts, help us to fund our running costs which are in the region of £15,000 per annum. If you would like to make a donation to the Band, no matter how small then please phone the Band Treasurer, Martin Brown on 07942 818529.

Dates for your diary – our next Coffee Morning with Donna’s excellent coffee for only £1.50 is on Saturday 31st March – 10 until 12 with the usual stalls.  Our Spring Concert this year is on 18th May – we hope you can make it – it promises to be fun.
